Among all the factors contributing to die failure, die material and heat treatment account for approximately 70%, making them the primary determinants of die service life.

Therefore, throughout the entire design and manufacturing process of a mold, the selection of mold materials and the appropriateness of the heat-treatment process are of paramount importance.

The stamping plant has put forward requirements for the materials used in the working parts of stamping dies: During operation, stamping dies are subjected to impacts, vibrations, friction, high pressure, tensile forces, and bending–torsional loads; moreover, some dies even operate at elevated temperatures (e.g., in cold extrusion). The operating conditions are complex, making the dies prone to wear, fatigue, fracture, and deformation. Consequently, the material requirements for die working parts are higher than those for ordinary components. Given the varying operating conditions of different types of stamping dies, the material requirements for their working parts also differ accordingly.

1. Requirements for blanking die materials: For thin-sheet blanking dies, the working parts should be made of materials with high wear resistance and hardness; for thick-sheet blanking dies, in addition to high wear resistance and a high compressive yield strength, the materials must also exhibit high fracture resistance, high flexural strength, and good toughness to prevent die fracture or chipping of the cutting edges. 2. Requirements for drawing die materials: The materials for the working parts of drawing dies should have excellent anti-adhesion (anti-seizing) properties, high wear resistance and hardness, adequate strength and toughness, and good machinability; moreover, they should undergo minimal distortion during heat treatment. 3. Requirements for cold extrusion die materials: The working parts of extrusion dies must possess high strength and hardness as well as high wear resistance; to avoid fracture under impact, they should also have a certain degree of toughness. In addition, since extrusion generates substantial temperature rise, the materials should further exhibit good thermal fatigue resistance and hot hardness. Selecting appropriate die materials and implementing proper heat-treatment processes in accordance with the material requirements for stamping-die working parts is crucial for ensuring die service life. For dies with different applications, the selection of steel grades and heat-treatment processes should be based on a comprehensive consideration of factors such as operating conditions, loading conditions, properties of the workpiece material, production batch size, and production rate, with due emphasis placed on specific performance requirements among those listed above.
